UFC 307 on paper was a great card with great matchups.

What came was a night filled with what Dana White called “atrocious” officiating and some hard truths for the sport and fighters on the card. While Alex Pereira was able to do what he does, the Utah Athletic Commission showed as much as they love combat sports, they have some growing to do.

Alex Pereira’s Methodical Victory

Pereira took the very best Khalil Rountree Jr. had early in the fight.

There were many moments that had fans believe Rountree could actually win this thing, judges even had the first two rounds scored for Rountree but it was all a part of the plan according to Pereira. In his post-fight interview, he said he saw in Rountree’s previous fights that he expended a lot of energy in the early rounds of his fights. With altitude being a factor in Utah, Pereira knew it would only be a matter of time before he could move in for the finish.

Eye Pokes and Blind Judging

There was a lot of odd officiating in Utah for UFC 307.

It was hard to ignore, especially during the bout with César Almeida and Ihor Potieria, where the amount of eye-pokes went unaddressed. Then, in the main card, the fight that had a lot of fans scratching their heads was the split decision win for Mario Bautista in his victory over Jose Aldo. While Bautista pretty much spent the entire fight trying to take Aldo down, Aldo did a lot of damage.

Split decisions usually mean a tough fight was fought, but in this case…

Maybe the commission needs to watch more fights.
