Three Storylines to Watch at UFC 305

Adesanya's Redemption Arc or Du Plessis' Coronation?

The main event between Israel Adesanya and Dricus du Plessis is a highly anticipated clash with significant implications for the middleweight division. Adesanya, a former champion, is looking to reclaim his throne after a surprising loss to Sean Strickland. Du Plessis, on the other hand, is aiming to solidify his reign as the new king of the division. The outcome of this fight will not only determine the champion but also shape the future of the middleweight landscape.

With Strickland waiting in the wings.

The Rise of Steve Erceg

The co-main event featuring Steve Erceg and Kai Kara-France is a crucial matchup for the flyweight division. Erceg, a relative newcomer, has quickly climbed the ranks and challenged for the title in his fourth UFC fight. A victory over Kara-France could solidify his position as a top contender and potentially set up a rematch with champion Alexandre Pantoja.

The Future of the Lightweight Division

The UFC lightweight division is historically one of the most entertaining ones for the UFC. The fight between Dan Hooker and Mateusz Gamrot holds significant importance for the lightweight division. Both fighters are ranked in the top 10, and a win for either could propel them closer to a title shot. The outcome of this fight will undoubtedly impact the divisional hierarchy and the potential matchups for the top contenders.

News of Note

Speaking of the lightweight division, Dana White told the media last Tuesday that Conor McGregor would not be fighting this year. But, late Thursday both McGregor and Michael Chandler posted on X that they both want to fight in December.

This was not long after Chandler made a pitch to the powers that be in the UFC. He pretty much said that they should deliver on what was so heavily promised since both fighters were coaches on “The Ultimate Fighter.” You can check out Chandler’s pitch in my piece over at MyMMANews. But currently, UFC 310, scheduled for December 7 has no headliner according to Marcel Dorff who often breaks news about events.

Chandler said it would be a nice way to close out the year and I can’t help but agree. What do you think?
